Varying tones of lemony white and cream lend an atmosphere of freshness to this image of a reclining female nude, White Couch 2. Stretched out at full length, the model seems to float on her supporting pillows as though on a comfortable cloud. The deft modelling of her form—her well-drawn shoulders, the sinuous curve of her back and lifted head—evokes her figure in a just few skillful brushstrokes. The result is a composition that appears minimal at first glance, but on close inspection reveals the rich observational detail Michael Alford always brings to his paintings of the human form.
