Shadowy blues and blacks provide the background for this serene image of a sleeping nude by Michael Alford. Using a tightly restricted palette (lamp black, titanium white and ultramarine blue) the artist emphasizes the contrast between the calm repose of the model and the expressive brushwork that surrounds her resting form. The result is a striking image in near-monochrome that nonetheless has a warm, human quality. The model’s pale fleshtones seem to shine out of the darkness, suggesting a center of tranquility in a stormy world.
