About the Image: Victorian Gothic, Royal Courts of Justice

The Royal Courts of Justice, located on The Strand in London, is a dramatic Gothic fantasy of a building. In this painting, I show it as it appears at the dusk of early winter. I set many of my cityscapes at this transitional time of year and day because so many different types of light are visible all at once in the same scene.

Here, there is the sky, still slighly pale with a setting sun. Against it, the dark roofs of the Royal Courts of Justice are silhouetted like the sharp spires of some medieval church. At the same moment, the building's facade is illuminated by streetlamps, while more lights shine from its ornate windows and from its main portico, where the light turns an unexpected turquoise blue. This kind of variety plays to my ongoing fascination with light and shadow and makes this subject a good kind of challenge to paint.
