About the Image

The Victoria and Albert Museum was established in 1899 as a resource for artists and craftspeople. This unique museum displays an extensive collection of human-made objects from around the world including ceramics, textiles, ironwork, stonework, glass, furniture, jewellery, paintings, sculpture and prints. The V&A has always been one of my favourite London museums. I visit frequently to conduct research and draw inspiration from the masters of the past.

Talking of Michelangelo pays tribute to one of my favourite rooms in the V&A, the Plaster Cast gallery. Here, full-sized replicas of famous statues such as Michelangelo's David (seen in the print) and architectural gems like Trajan's column are displayed in a stunning setting. The gallery space itself is one of the V&A's most impressive. Its walls are painted in the original richly-coloured decorative scheme and its vaulted ceiling is lofty enough to house the full-sized portico of Santiago de Compostela Cathedral.  I hoped to capture the vivid jewellike green of the walls and to engage playfully with the size difference between the enormous sculptures and the small visitors among them.
