About the Image

While walking through the streets of Pietrasanta in Tuscany, I happened to spot this picturesque stonemason's studio. I was immediately attracted to its air of being an authentic working studio, a place where people are in fact making art. The stonemasons were not present as I passed by (having lunch, I guessed) but the many statues on various stages of completion spoke for their labor. Some were finely carved, some were barely roughed out of the blocks. Together, they form a sort of classical collection in contrast with workaday studio details such as the bicycle and bright red handcart — a juxtaposition I always find compelling.

About Pietrasanta: Pietrasanta is a charming town steeped in artistic and craft tradition. Thanks to its access to the quarries of the Apuan Alps and its close proximity to the sea, it has been for centuries a center of marble processing and a marketplace for the finest stone including the pale, gray-veined Carrara marble prized throughout the world. Michelangelo stayed and worked extensively in Pietrasanta, buying high grade marble for his sculptures and overseeing its rough cutting and transportation to Florence. Today it has a good open-air museum with excellent works by many contemporary artists.
