In this image of a female nude, Red Drape, Mirror, Michael Alford displays his mastery both as a colorist and draughtsman of the human form. A loosely painted background of bright white, intense blue and dark red seems to embrace the reclining model in an atmosphere of intimacy. Her casual, unselfconscious pose suggests calm relaxation. Her sinuous contours are tenderly evoked using a blend of ochre, vermillion and white, with touches of black and gold. Burnt sienna, an earth pigment, provides the lustrous brown of her hair.
