About the Image

In this luminous urban scene, Michael Alford captures the sociable atmosphere of a stylish London financial district drinking establishment, Fortnum and Mason’s bar, located in the courtyard of the iconic Royal Exchange building.

F&M The Royal Exchange shows the bar in the evening after a working day, full of customers meeting up to enjoy a relaxing drink with friends. Waiters bustle between tables, bartenders busily prepare orders behind the elegant circular art deco bar in a scene that evokes the everyday of London life, yet captures some of the glamour of a big city watering hole. Stylish lighting delineates the space and lends a feeling of warm enclosure to the open air bar. F&M’s signature Eau de Nil green shines out from the subtle greys and lemon yellows of the background, punctuated here and there by bright points of intense scarlet.

"I was drawn to the complex play of light and darkness in this scene, where the bar's clever lighting scheme emphasizes the faces of the customers, the way theatre lighting does, and seems to throw the dark background of the courtyard into even more intense shadow. It is an island of warmth in a cool sea of grey." Michael Alford
