St Pauls Cathedral is London’s most recognizeable landmark and a favorite subject of artists since its construction in 1675. I never fail to be impressed by the enduring power of this building's unmistakeable silhouette or the way its signature dome still dominates the City skyline, even when surrounded by towering modern skyscrapers. To paint the City of London, I always say, every artist must embrace the visual importance of St Pauls Cathedral and make it part of his or her work.
This painting is number four of a series of five contemporary cityscapes I painted that centre on the streets around the iconic cathedral and are, in many ways and forever, defined by it. In this scene, its imposing dome looks down on a busy street scene where working Londoners come and go during a normal working day. I always like the contrast between the cathedral's grand architecture and the ordinary business of city life happening all around it.
